Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with their carved-out terraces, and the poor soils, from which the vines draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals make the most of their grapes and terroir, reflected in the top quality and small production volumes. The wines are aged in barriques from the estate’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command premium prices. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown here; the more prestigious wine regions of Hermitage and Côte Rotie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils.
