Everything here is exceptional: its location on steep slopes with terraces carved into them, and the poor soils that force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals get the most out of their grapes and terroir, resulting in outstanding quality produced in small quantities. The wines are aged in barriques from the family’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command top prices. It is no surprise, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe region\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Rhône is a very important wine-growing region. It encompasses four wine-growing areas that differ greatly in terms of climate, topography and grape varieties: the Northern and Southern Rhône, the area in the middle around the tributary river Drôme, and the area east of the Southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah – the only permitted red grape variety – and the white Viognier are grown here; the more prestigious wine-growing areas such as Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils.
