Guigal\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003ePhilippe Guigal, a highly gifted oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with their carved-out terraces, and the poor soils, which force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals bring out the best in their grapes and terroir, reflected in the outstanding quality and small quantities. The wines are matured in barriques from the family’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command top prices. It is no wonder, then, that the Guigal winery has produced more wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker than any other.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe Region\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Rhône is of great significance for viticulture. It encompasses four wine-growing areas that differ greatly in terms of climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area in the middle around the tributary Drôme, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown here; the more prestigious wine-growing areas, such as Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie, are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils.
