Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with their terraced vineyards carved into them, and the poor soils that force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals get the very best from their vines and terroir, reflected in the top quality and limited quantities. The wines are aged in barriques made at the family’s own cooperage, and these outstanding wines command premium prices. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown; the more prestigious wine-growing areas such as Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils.
