The Mediterranean climate and calcareous subsoils with iron-oxide-rich layers above create perfect conditions for viticulture. In the hot, dry summers, the grapes ripen optimally, and the wines become deep dark, earthy and full-bodied. In contrast to the other southern regions, there are hardly any mountains here; the landscape consists mainly of high plateaus and lowlands.
