Short, dry summers are followed by misty autumns and very cold winters. This is a challenge that Piedmontese winegrowers meet with success: Alongside Tuscany, Piedmont produces most of Italy's finest wines with unmistakably full-bodied, multifaceted aromas, which are due to these special climatic conditions. The red grape variety Barbera dominates, followed by Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, from which the famous Barolo is made.
