The region

Ticino is Switzerland's southernmost canton and, thanks to its climate and the highest summer temperatures in the country, is ideally suited to viticulture. The Bordeaux grape Merlot is grown in over 80 percent of the nine districts of Bellinzona, Blenio, Leventina, Locarno, Mendrision, Riviera, Vallamaggia and Mesolcina. Due to the alpine topography, the wine-growing areas are scattered and consist of small plots on mountain slopes, where a thin layer of soil covers a granite subsoil. Nowhere else in Switzerland is the concentration of quality winegrowers and wines higher, which led to the introduction in 1997 of a system similar to the Italian DOC. These full-bodied, aromatic red wines, which also age well, are among the best in Switzerland and are of international standard.
