About Castello di Volpaia Biologico

Wine has been grown in the small border village of Volpaia, between the provinces of Siena and Florence, since the 12th century. The village, considered one of the best-preserved medieval villages, revolves entirely around wine. Since 1967, the Stianti Mascheroni family has produced elegant, smooth wines with great dedication and expertise—today using organic methods. The vineyards belonging to Castello di Volpaia are situated at 450 to 600 metres above sea level, making Volpaia one of the highest-altitude wineries in the Chianti region. They are so high that the vineyards lie above the fog and the spring and autumn frosts.

The Region

Alongside Piedmont, Tuscany is probably Italy’s most famous wine-growing region. The Etruscans cultivated vines there long before the Romans, making it one of Europe’s oldest wine-growing regions. Tuscany is known primarily—and with justifiable pride—for the world-famous Chianti and Brunello. In fact, however, Tuscany is Italy’s leading producer of premium wines. Blessed with abundant sunshine, cooled by sometimes strong sea breezes, and still receiving sufficient rainfall, Tuscan vines produce outstanding wines on barren limestone, clay and sandstone soils, as well as various combinations of these, which wine lovers around the world rave about.
