About Castello di Volpaia Biologico
Wine has been produced since the 12th century in the small border village of Volpaia, between the provinces of Siena and Florence. Considered one of the best-preserved medieval villages, it is entirely devoted to wine. Since 1967, the Stianti Mascheroni family has produced elegant, supple wines with great dedication and expertise—today using organic methods. The vineyards belonging to Castello di Volpaia lie at altitudes of 450 to 600 metres above sea level, making Volpaia one of the highest-altitude wineries in the Chianti region. They are so high that the vineyards sit above the fog and spring and autumn frosts.
The Region
Alongside Piedmont, Tuscany is probably Italy’s most famous wine-growing region. The Etruscans cultivated vines there long before the Romans, making it one of Europe’s oldest wine-growing areas. In Tuscany, people speak mainly—and with justifiable pride—of the world-famous Chianti and Brunello. In fact, however, Tuscany is Italy’s largest producer of top-quality wines. Blessed with abundant sunshine, cooled by sometimes strong sea breezes and still receiving enough rain, Tuscan vines produce outstanding wines on poor limestone, clay and sandstone soils, as well as on various combinations of these, much admired by wine lovers around the world.
