About Castello di Volpaia

Wine has been cultivated in the small border village of Volpaia, situated between the provinces of Siena and Florence, since the 12th century. The village, considered one of the best-preserved medieval villages, is entirely defined by wine. Since 1967, the Stianti Mascheroni family has been producing elegant, supple wines with great dedication and expertise – today using organic methods. The vineyards belonging to Castello di Volpaia are located at an altitude of 450 to 600 meters above sea level, making Volpaia one of the highest wineries in the Chianti region. High enough that the vineyards lie above the fog and the frost of spring and autumn.

The Region

Alongside Piedmont, Tuscany is arguably Italy's most famous wine-growing region. Long before the Romans, the Etruscans were already cultivating vines there, making it one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Europe. In Tuscany, people speak primarily – and with justified pride – of the world-famous Chianti and Brunello. In fact, however, Tuscany is Italy's largest supplier of top-tier wines. Spoiled by plenty of sunshine, cooled by occasionally strong sea breezes, yet supplied with enough rain, Tuscan vines produce outstanding quality on barren limestone as well as clay and sandstone soils and various combinations thereof, which wine lovers all over the world rave about.
