About Château Citran
Château Citran, north of the village of Avensan, is one of the oldest manor houses in the Médoc. It was run by the same family for 600 years, until they left the estate in 1832. Subsequently, changes of ownership as well as economic and political unrest led to fluctuating wine quality. In 1945, the estate was restored and returned to success, and in 1986 it was sold to a Japanese company. The new owners invested heavily in the cellars and vineyards, quickly bringing Citran into the elite of Cru Bourgeois wines. Today, Château Citran is owned by the Taillan Group, whose seasoned experts run the estate with extensive expertise.
The Region
More great wines come from prestigious Bordeaux than from any other wine-growing region. Named after the trading city of the same name, the area lies on the Atlantic coast at the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The vineyards hug the Gironde and its tributaries, across more than 50 appellations. Pine forests to the south shield the region from the strong, salty winds from the Atlantic, keeping the climate mild and temperatures rarely below freezing. Long, warm summers are perfect for late-ripening grape varieties, helping produce fine, subtle wines that age well. The most famous and widely grown Bordeaux grape variety worldwide is Cabernet Sauvignon, although Merlot is the most widely planted. A layer of gravel and sand covers the region’s limestone bedrock, allowing the vines to root deeply and ensuring excellent drainage.
