The region

Apulia in southern Italy is one of the country's most productive wine-growing regions. Stretching 400 kilometres from the spur of the boot near Foggia to the heel's tip beyond Lecce, Apulia is home to the greatest variety of grape varieties in southern Italy, around 80 percent of which are red. The Mediterranean climate and calcareous subsoils topped with iron-oxide-rich layers create perfect conditions for viticulture. The grapes ripen optimally during the hot, dry summers, producing wines that are deep in colour, earthy and full-bodied. Unlike other southern regions, there are hardly any mountains here; the landscape consists mainly of plateaus and lowlands. This wine-growing region has enormous potential—the possibilities of its countless indigenous grape varieties have yet to be fully explored. Even today, Apulia offers wines of the highest quality, great intensity and richness; the finest of these grow on the Salento peninsula.
