About Contratto
Contratto can already look back on a colourful 150-year history. The winery specialises in Metodo Classico, and for good reason. Back in the 1920s and 1930s, Contratto had the privilege of producing fine wines for the Vatican and royal houses. In fact, Contratto was exported to and enjoyed in even the most remote corners of the British Empire. Since 2011, Contratto has been owned by the Rivetti family—a highly dedicated and experienced winemaking family, which also owns the top winery «La Spinetta». Thanks to its innovative and tireless efforts, Contratto has remained a popular and successful brand.
The Region
Piedmont («at the foot of the mountains») in north-western Italy lies along the southern foothills of the Alps. The climatic conditions are challenging: apart from the area around the Po Valley, it is considerably cooler here than in the rest of Italy. Short, dry summers give way to foggy autumns and very cold winters. Piedmont’s winegrowers have successfully risen to this challenge: Alongside Tuscany, Piedmont produces the greatest number of Italy’s outstanding wines, with unmistakably full-bodied, multifaceted aromas that reflect these special climatic conditions. The red grape variety Barbera predominates, followed by Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, which is used to make the famous Barolo. The vines thrive at elevations of 150 to 400 m above sea level on a variety of soils—from clay-rich soils that produce a complex bouquet to sandy, limestone-rich soils that lend the wine a robust structure.
