About Diemersfontein

Vines have been growing at Diemersfontein since the early 1970s. However, quality wines have only been produced since 2001, when the current owner, David Sonnenberg, established a winery. Diemersfontein wines immediately attracted international attention and acclaim: the very first vintage won the Paul Sauer Trophy for the best oak-aged Pinotage at the South African Young Wine Show. Today, Diemersfontein wines are available worldwide and regularly receive high ratings at wine competitions and in specialist magazines. The estate itself also offers guest accommodation for holidaymakers.

The Region

Wellington lies in the far south of Africa, in the heart of the Cape wine region, about 60 kilometres from Cape Town and the sea. It is one of South Africa’s most important and fastest-growing wine regions. Wine has been grown here for over 100 years on the gentle hills, thanks to the favourable Mediterranean climate; the region came into its own in the 1940s. In the region’s varied soils, ranging from granite to sandstone, vines flourish under the protection of the mountains, producing concentrated, aromatic, fresh and elegant wines from the main grape varieties, Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. Other varieties are also grown, from Shiraz and Cabernet to Viognier.
