About Don Aurelio

In the 13th century, Cistercian monks brought winemaking from Burgundy to Valdepeñas, the “Valley of Stones” between Madrid and Málaga, with its stony, reddish-yellow soils—now Spain’s largest wine-growing region. The deep chalk layer stores water during the hot summer months, which benefits the vines. Using the latest methods, the family-owned company Navarro Lopez, founded in 1904, produces superb, smooth wines here. Its unwavering focus on varietal wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, the low number of vines per hectare and the careful ageing of the wines in barriques make Don Aurelio a real insider tip.

The region

Castile, the region of windmills, produces half of Spain’s wine. The vast, flat southern half of the large central Spanish plateau is a land of extremes: at 500 to 700 metres above sea level, summers are extremely hot and dry. While the landscape is still green in spring, by summer it turns ochre-yellow, and most riverbeds dry up. The predominant, typically reddish-brown, poor soil is sandy and contains limestone or clay. Its ability to retain scarce water makes viticulture possible here. A new generation of modern winemakers mainly cultivates the white grape variety Airén and focuses on clean, authentic, mostly organic production.
