Don Aurelio Valdepeñas DO Reserva 2019 Red Wine – A balanced, persistent, fruity, fresh and full-bodied wine, ruby red with violet highlights and a fairly intense, complex aroma of dark berries, followed by hints of sour cherry and plum, dried fruit and a slightly smoky toasted note. On the palate, this red wine is dry, harmonious, full-bodied and fairly smooth. Its fruit and smoky aromas come through here too, joined by subtle notes of pepper and earth.

About Don Aurelio

In the 13th century, Cistercian monks brought viticulture from Burgundy to Valdepeñas, the “Valley of Stones” between Madrid and Málaga, with its stony, reddish-yellow soils—now Spain’s largest wine-growing region. The deep layer of chalk stores water during the hot summer months, benefiting the vines. Using the most modern methods, family-owned Navarro Lopez, founded in 1904, produces outstanding, supple wines here. Its consistent focus on single-varietal wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, the low number of vines per hectare and the careful ageing of its wines in barriques make Don Aurelio a real insider tip.

The region

Castile, the region of windmills, produces half of Spain’s wine. The vast, flat southern half of the great central Spanish plateau is a land of extremes: at 500 to 700 metres above sea level, summers are extremely hot and dry. While the landscape is still green in spring, by summer it turns ochre-yellow, and most riverbeds dry up. The predominant, typical reddish-brown soil is poor and sandy, calcareous or clay-rich. Its ability to retain scarce water makes winegrowing possible here. A new generation of modern winemakers primarily cultivates the white Airén grape and focuses on clean, authentic and mostly organic production.
