About E. Guigal

Philippe Guigal, a highly talented oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with their carved-out terraces, and the poor soils, which force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals get the very best from their vines and terroir, as reflected in the outstanding quality and limited quantities. The wines are aged in barriques from the winery’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command top prices. It is no wonder, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.

The Region

The Rhône is a very important wine-growing region. It encompasses four areas that differ greatly in terms of climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area in the middle around the Drôme, a tributary, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown here; the more prestigious wine-growing areas, such as Hermitage and Côte Rôtie, are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils. Most of the wines there are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which are also used in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
