About E. Guigal
Philippe Guigal, a highly talented oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with their carved terraces, and the barren soils that force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals bring out the very best in their grapes and terroir, resulting in top quality produced in small quantities. The wines are aged in barriques from the estate’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command premium prices. It is no wonder, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.
The region
The Rhône is of great significance for winegrowing. It links four wine-growing areas that differ greatly in climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the central area around the Drôme, a tributary, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate, with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown; the more prestigious wine regions such as Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils. Most wines there are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, also used in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape region.
