E. Guigal Crozes-Hermitage AC rouge 2021 red wine – This balanced, lasting and full-bodied wine gleams ruby red in the glass. A fairly intense bouquet of cloves and pepper, cherry, sour cherry and black berries rises to the nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied, harmonious and smooth, with firm tannins. The fruit aromas mentioned are complemented on the palate by lovely toasted notes and a hint of animal character, a touch of earthiness and a pleasant finish

About E. Guigal

Philippe Guigal, a highly gifted oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France's Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with their carved terraces and the poor soils, from which the vines draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals bring out the best in their grapes and terroir, resulting in top quality in small quantities. The wines are aged in barriques from the winery's own cooperage, and the outstanding wines command premium prices. It is no wonder, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.

The region

The Rhône is a highly important wine-growing region. It encompasses four wine-growing areas that differ greatly in terms of climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area in the middle around the tributary Drôme, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. Almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown on steep slopes with granite-rich soils; the more prestigious wine-growing areas such as Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils. Most of the wines there are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which are also used in the well-known Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
