E. Guigal Saint Joseph AC "lieu-dit" 2022 Red Wine – This deep red, spicy and complex wine is balanced and full-bodied. The first aromas to emerge are dried plum, raisin and strawberry jam, followed by intensely ripe berries and notes of caramel, smoke and chocolate, complemented on the palate by spicy notes of liquorice, clove, cinnamon, pepper and vanilla. An elegant body, harmonious structure and long, pleasant finish round out the experience.

About E. Guigal

Philippe Guigal, a highly talented oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: its location on steep slopes with terraces carved into them, and the barren soils, which force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals bring out the best in their vines and terroir, resulting in top quality in limited quantities. The wines are aged in barriques made at the estate’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command premium prices. It is no surprise, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.

The region

The Rhône is a major wine-growing region. It encompasses four wine-growing areas that differ greatly in terms of climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area around the Drôme tributary in the middle, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate, with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown here; the more prestigious wine regions of Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are also located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils. Most of the wines produced there are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which are also used, among other places, in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape region.
