E. Guigal Saint-Joseph AC Vignes de l'Hospice 2022 Red Wine – This balanced, fruity, full-bodied wine has a deep black-red colour with violet highlights. Its quite powerful bouquet is dominated by aromas of cherry, sour cherry and ripe wild berries, complemented by notes of prune, clove and pepper. Dry and fresh on the attack, it has a rounded, harmonious and rather soft structure, with precise berry fruit on the finish, along with a hint of coffee and earthy, mineral notes.

About E. Guigal
Philippe Guigal, a highly talented oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with terraces carved into them, and the poor soils, from which the vines draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals make the most of their vines and terroir, reflected in the top quality and small quantities of their wines. They are aged in barriques made in the estate’s own cooperage, and these outstanding wines command top prices. It is no wonder, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.
The region
The Rhône is a major wine-growing region. It encompasses four wine-growing areas that differ considerably in terms of climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area in the middle around the tributary Drôme, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate, with harsh winters and hot summers. Almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown on steep slopes with granite-rich soils; the prestigious wine-growing areas of Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are also located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils. Most of its wines are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which are also used, among other places, in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
