The region

Australia is vast and offers a wide range of climatic conditions. Around three-quarters of its wine-growing regions, such as the famous Barossa Valley, are located in the cooler south, with its favourable soils; winegrowers in Western and Northern Australia use artificial irrigation when needed. By far the most important grape varieties in Australia are Shiraz—which accounts for the largest area under vine—Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Wines made from these varieties in particular have earned an excellent reputation and numerous awards around the world.
