About Egomei

Egomei is a winery devoted to pure enjoyment. Its 120 hectares of breathtaking countryside are located in Alfaro. The winery is in Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja). The vineyards have been carefully tended here since 1975, with the aim from the outset of producing the highest-quality wines from Tempranillo and Graciano grapes in select single vineyards. Expertise is also at the heart of winemaking at Egomei. The wine is aged in French Allier oak barrels and small tanks until it achieves the perfect balance and depth.

The region

Rioja, Spain’s leading wine-growing region, is divided into three areas: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. The region is famous for its outstanding red wines and vast wineries, the latter because all wines are aged for at least one year in oak barrels and at least another year in the bottle. After the phylloxera disaster, considerable capital flowed from Basque industry into rebuilding the region and exporting its wines to the USA, which is why the wines have traditionally been aged in American oak barrels. Tempranillo is the predominant red grape variety grown in Rioja, on a wide range of soils, from sand to alluvial deposits. Rioja Baja has a Mediterranean climate, with extremely hot, dry summers and mild winters, while the cooler Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa feel the influence of the Atlantic.
