The Region

Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, borders Austria and Slovenia. It is one of Italy's finest white wine regions, and young, up-and-coming winemakers are increasingly making waves abroad with their outstanding wines. The region has long been shaped by the influences of three ethnic groups and cultures: Italian, German-speaking and Slavic, while the Celts were already cultivating grapes here. The fairly mild climate, shaped by the adjacent sea and the protection of the Alps, contributes to a bountiful harvest. The loose, nutrient-poor soils covering the former seabed are also responsible for the wine's mineral freshness. Here, the vines can easily send their roots deep into the earth and absorb many minerals that produce high-quality wines.
