The region

Friuli, in Italy’s far northeast, borders Austria and Slovenia. It is one of Italy’s finest white wine regions, and young, up-and-coming winemakers are increasingly making a name for themselves abroad with their outstanding wines. The influences of three peoples and cultures have always converged here: Italian, Germanic and Slavic, with the Celts already growing grapes in the region. The relatively mild climate, shaped by the nearby sea and the protection of the Alps, contributes to abundant harvests. The loose, nutrient-poor soils that cover the former seabed are also responsible for the wines’ mineral freshness. Here, the vines can easily drive their roots into the soil and absorb many minerals, resulting in high-quality wines.
