The Region

Veneto, known in the local language as Veneto, is one of Italy's most popular wine regions, with the tourist hotspot of Venice – and one of the country's three largest. Geographically, Veneto is highly diverse: one third is covered by mountain ranges, while the region's central plain features extensive rice fields and a long coastline. Accordingly, Veneto's wines are wonderfully varied. Stony, calcareous soil covered with red and brown earth provides good growing conditions for the vines. The Alps, whose foothills border the extensive region to the north, protect it from harsher Northern European weather and ensure a balanced climate.
