The Region

Veneto, known in the local language as Veneto, is one of Italy’s most popular wine regions, thanks in part to the tourist hotspot of Venice, and one of the country’s three largest. Geographically, Veneto is extremely diverse: one third is covered by mountain ranges, while the central plains are home to extensive rice fields and a long coastline. Accordingly, Veneto’s wines are highly varied. Stony, calcareous soil covered with red and brown earth provides good growing conditions for the vines. The Alps, whose foothills border the vast region to the north, protect it from harsher northern European weather and ensure a balanced climate.
