About Leonardo da Vinci
500 YEARS OF WINEMAKING EXPERTISE: for half a millennium, the world has known that Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant inventor and artist. Less well known is the fact that Leonardo came from a winemaking family in the Tuscan village of Vinci and that wine was his great passion. Villa Da Vinci, the estate where Leonardo grew up in the 16th century and where his family had been growing vines for 500 years, still exists today, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Shaped by life on the estate, Leonardo also devoted his genius to studying viticulture and developing new methods to continually improve the quality of wines. He recorded his findings in letters and sketches. Today, the wines of Cantina Leonardo da Vinci are produced according to the traditional Metodo Leonardo®—from grape growing to vinification.
The region
Alongside Piedmont, Tuscany is probably Italy’s most famous wine-growing region. The Etruscans cultivated vines there long before the Romans, making it one of Europe’s oldest wine-growing regions. In Tuscany, people speak mainly—and with justifiable pride—of the world-famous Chianti and Brunello. In fact, however, Tuscany is Italy’s largest producer of top-quality wines. Blessed with abundant sunshine, cooled by sometimes strong sea breezes and still receiving enough rain, Tuscan vines produce outstanding wines on poor limestone, clay and sandstone soils, as well as various combinations of these soil types—wines that wine lovers around the world rave about.
