The region

In the south of France, geographically adjoining the Rhône Valley, the country’s largest wine region, Languedoc, stretches along the Mediterranean coastline, its vineyards interspersed with picturesque old stone houses. The climate is characterised by abundant sunshine, mild winters and hot summers. The vines that thrive here, mostly on limestone soils, are robust and strong thanks to the region’s dry conditions. Alongside viticulture, olive growing is also a major agricultural activity here; the olives thrive without artificial irrigation, too. Languedoc is an exceptionally colourful region: the Mediterranean atmosphere is palpable everywhere—in the typical earthenware, the airy fabrics and the light, flavourful dishes.
