The region

In the south of France, adjoining the Rhône Valley geographically, the Languedoc, the country’s largest wine region, stretches along the Mediterranean coastline with its vineyards and picturesque old stone houses. The climate is characterised by abundant sunshine, mild winters and hot summers. The vines that thrive here, mostly on limestone soils, are robust and hardy due to the region’s dry conditions. Alongside viticulture, olive growing is the dominant agricultural activity here; the olives also thrive without artificial irrigation. Languedoc is an exceptionally colourful region: the Mediterranean atmosphere is palpable everywhere—in the traditional earthenware, airy fabrics and light, flavoursome dishes.
