About Marchesi di Barolo

Over 200 years ago, the Marquises Falletti, former owners of the winery, created the “wine of kings” at their historic castle: Barolo. One of the figures associated with the name Barolo ever since is also a pioneer: Pietro Emilio Abbona, an ancestor of the current owner family, introduced the wine of his region and, with it, Cantina Marchesi di Barolo to the world. Even today, the wines from Marchesi di Barolo live up to their illustrious name. They are remarkably powerful and long-lived – and have received numerous international awards for good reason.

The region

Piedmont in northwestern Italy (“at the foot of the mountains”) lies along the southern foothills of the Alps. The climate is demanding: with the exception of the area around the Po Valley, it is considerably cooler here than in the rest of Italy. Short, dry summers give way to foggy autumns and very cold winters. Piedmont’s winegrowers have risen to this challenge: alongside Tuscany, Piedmont produces the most outstanding wines in Italy, with unmistakably full-bodied, complex aromas shaped by these particular climatic conditions. The red grape variety Barbera predominates, followed by Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, which is used to make the famous Barolo. The vines grow at elevations of 150 to 400 m above sea level in a variety of soils – from clay-rich soils that produce a complex bouquet to calcareous sandy soils that contribute to the wine’s robust structure.
