The region

Sicily, home to Italy’s largest wine-growing area, lies off the tip of the Italian boot. Its climate—intense summer heat and little rainfall, with an African influence in the south—and geography—mountainous terrain with poor soils—make the island ideally suited to viticulture. The vineyards make the most of these natural advantages: hillside locations with excellent exposure, abundant sunshine, favourable elevations with significant temperature differences between day and night, and a whole range of characterful native grape varieties. Soils vary depending on the island’s subregion. In the west, very poor soils of volcanic origin predominate. It is no wonder, then, that the most sought-after sites for intense, deeply coloured and fruity wines are found on the slopes of Mount Etna. Other regions feature sandy soils with a high iron content. Combined with an underlying layer of limestone, they lend the wines fresh mineral notes.
