The Region

Northwestern Italian Piemonte ("at the foot of the mountains") lies at the southern foothills of the Alps. The climatic conditions are demanding: It is significantly cooler here – apart from the Po Valley area – than in the rest of Italy. Short, dry summers are followed by misty autumns and very cold winters. A challenge that Piemontese winegrowers meet successfully: Alongside Tuscany, Piemonte produces most of Italy's top wines with unmistakably full-bodied, multifaceted aromas, which are due to these special climatic conditions. The red grape variety Barbera dominates, followed by Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, from which the famous Barolo is made. The vines thrive between 150 and 400 m above sea level on different soils – from loamy for a multifaceted bouquet to lime-rich sandy soils, which favor a strong structure in the wine.
