The Region

On Sardinia, Italy's second-largest island, wine has been made for a very long time. Civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Spaniards have left their mark, leading to a great diversity of grape varieties. Historically, linguistically and culturally, Sardinia seems disconnected from Italy; therefore, it is no wonder that most of the significant grape varieties are of Spanish origin. In Sardinia, we certainly find a large number of grape varieties that are as distinctive as the Sardinians themselves. From these, a growing number of winemakers produce equally individual, yet outstanding wines that are considered a hidden gem by many. Generally, the Mediterranean climate shapes Sardinia, although it is cooler in the north and very dry on the south coast; the soils are partly loamy in the inland areas and more sandy along the coast.
