The Region

Wine has been made on Sardinia, Italy's second-largest island, for a very long time. Civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Spaniards have left their mark, leading to a great diversity of grape varieties. Historically, linguistically and culturally, Sardinia seems detached from Italy; it is therefore no wonder that most of the significant grape varieties are of Spanish origin. Sardinia is home to a great number of grape varieties that are as distinctive as the Sardinians themselves. From these, an increasing number of winemakers produce equally individual yet outstanding wines that are considered a well-kept secret by many. Generally, the Mediterranean climate shapes Sardinia, with cooler conditions in the north and very dry conditions on the south coast; the soils are partly loamy inland, while they tend to be sandier along the coast.
