The Region

The central Italian region of Abruzzo, with its long Adriatic coast, is home to a number of distinctive grape varieties. Around two-thirds of Abruzzo is mountainous, while one-third is hilly. Vines are also planted at high altitudes of up to 600 m above sea level at the foot of the mountain range on limestone, loam, sand, and gravel soils. The climate in this part of Italy is characterized by large temperature fluctuations – not only between the seasons, but above all during the summer months between day and night. Generally, however, it is warm during the ripening phase, and the location of the vineyards is favorable, as they slope down towards the sea, allowing the grapes to fully enjoy the summer warmth and also the reflection of the sun. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is produced to high quality standards in two different styles: a young and fresh taste with firm fruit, and an intense, full-bodied, robust wine style.
