The Region

Sicily, home to Italy's largest wine-growing area, lies at the tip of the Italian boot; climate – intense summer heat and little rainfall, with a southern African influence – and geography – mountainous terrain with poor soils – make the island ideal for viticulture. This makes excellent use of nature's advantages: hillside vineyards with excellent exposure, plenty of sunlight, favourable altitudes with significant temperature differences between day and night, as well as a wide range of distinctive native grape varieties. The soils vary depending on the island's subregion: In the west, very poor soils of volcanic origin predominate. It is no wonder, then, that the most sought-after sites for intense, deep, dark and fruity wines are located on the slopes of Mount Etna. In other regions, sandy soils with a high iron content can be found. Combined with an underlying layer of limestone, they lend the wines fresh mineral notes.
