The Region

Veneto, as it is known in the local language, is one of Italy's most popular wine regions, thanks in part to its tourist hub, Venice, and is one of the country's three largest. Geographically, Veneto is extremely diverse: one third is covered by mountain ranges, while the central plain features extensive rice fields and a long stretch of coastline. Venetian wines are correspondingly varied. Stony, limestone-rich soils covered with red and brown earth provide excellent growing conditions for the vines, while the Alps, whose foothills border the extensive northern area, protect the region from harsher Northern European weather and ensure a balanced climate. In the warmer plains along the Adriatic coast, red grape varieties are predominantly grown, while the cooler areas produce excellent white wines, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Prosecco.
