About Weingut Stadt Krems

Weingut Stadt Krems is not only located in the heart of the city of 28,000 inhabitants – it also belongs to it. All 31 hectares of vineyards lie within the city limits. Its history of more than 550 years makes the winery one of the oldest in Europe. As a member of the "Traditional Austrian Wineries" association, the winery is committed to preserving historic, venerable vineyard sites. The young winemaking team has one goal: to produce purist terroir wines. Here, everything revolves around the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling varieties. The wines tell of the origin of the grapes, the character of the region and the individuality of the grape varieties. Authenticity is always at the forefront.

The Region

The city of Krems is located in a basin at approximately 220 m above sea level. Two soil types characterize the vineyards: gneiss is ideal for Riesling, while loess soils give Grüner Veltliner its spice and structure. Two climate zones also meet here: an oceanic one in the west with mild winters and moderately warm summers, and a Pannonian one in the east with very cold winters and dry summers. This leads to strong temperature differences between day and night and within a small area, balanced by the Danube. These extremes shape the vegetation and provide ideal conditions for fruity, bouquet-intense wines.
